Oily skin can be very tricky to control – it appears shiny and develops breakouts frequently, if not treated properly. People ‘blessed’ with oily skin probably know what we’re talking about!
Here are some great tips to keep your skin healthy and shine-free throughout the week.
Defining oily skin
First let’s get to the bottom of what causes oily skin. At its most basic it is an excessive production of sebum, which is the main cause of shininess and breakouts. Sebum is a mixture of lipids, and forms a protective layer against the multiplication of microorganisms. But when sebum production becomes imbalanced, it sets various skin problems. The cause of sebum production imbalance can be hormonal, result from a poor diet or have genetic origins.
What to do
Our first tip: handle oily skin gently, so you don’t aggravate sebaceous glands when you’re trying to get your shine under control.
Cleanse. Avoid harsh cleansers that will only overstimulate sebum release. The key is to gently cleanse your skin without stripping away its natural oils.
Tone. But do not dehydrate with alcohol-loaded lotions. Look for a balancing toner that clarifies the skin, while adjusting its pH.
Exfoliate. Steer clear of abrasive products. We recommend using a gentle exfoliator to regularly and gently exfoliate your skin to remove dead cells.
Mask. Clarify your skin weekly with a gentle clay mask.
Moisturise. Do not skip this step as oily skin can still be dehydrated. Opt for a light emulsion.
Balance out. Few realise that beauty oils actually rebalance the skin and improve its overall appearance.
